Abel Tasman Track
Abel Tasman Track
Everyone’s favourite Great Walk, the Abel Tasman Coastal Track will take you to bay after bay of unsurpassed beauty – until the next bay comes insight.
The track wanders inland at times, giving walkers a great experience of the New Zealand bush, a variety of landscape features and plenty of birdlife. A massive ecological restoration project, named Project Janszoon, is working to reverse the trend of ecological decline in the park by reducing predator numbers and weeds, restoring ecosystems, and re-introducing native birds, animals and plants to the national park. The project is named after Abel Janszoon Tasman who, in 1642, was the first European to visit New Zealand. Walkable from either end, (Marahau in the south or Wainui Bay in the north) the track comprises 55 km of well-maintained pathways that can be easily accomplished by inexperienced trampers year-round. Accommodation is in DOC huts or at tent sites.
